Background of the Study
Youth migration, often driven by unemployment, insecurity, and lack of opportunities, poses significant challenges to rural development in Nigeria. In Gashua Local Government Area (LGA), Yobe State, migration disrupts the social fabric and undermines local development efforts. Development communication offers a pathway to address this issue by raising awareness about local opportunities, promoting skill acquisition, and fostering a sense of community belonging. Communication strategies, including campaigns, workshops, and participatory approaches, have proven effective in curbing migration in similar contexts (Ibrahim et al., 2023). This study explores how development communication can reduce youth migration in Gashua LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
High rates of youth migration in Gashua LGA result in a loss of human capital and impede community development. Limited awareness of local opportunities and weak communication about potential benefits of staying contribute to this challenge. While development communication has the potential to address these issues, its impact in Gashua LGA remains underexplored. This study investigates how communication can influence youth decisions to remain and contribute to local development.
